Rare earth and magnesium materials are essential to the production of smaller, louder, lighter, and more robust consumer technologies. Rare earth magnets are found in the majority of consumer electronics to provide power to the vibrating motors and volume to the speakers. They are also used in hard drive components for laptops. Magnesium can be used for light-weighting cases and bodies for phones, tablets and computers and are generally 20-30% lighter than their aluminum counterparts. Having access to an abundance of these domestically produced materials is critical to drive profit margins upward for manufacturing companies striving to a make stronger, lighter and more powerful consumer devices.
